D-U-N-S Number

A unique nine-digit identifier assigned by Dun & Bradstreet to each business entity and location, used to match and track commercial credit data.

The D-U-N-S (Data Universal Numbering System) number is D&B's proprietary nine-digit identifier, assigned per legal entity and per physical location. It functions as the primary key of the commercial credit world: trade experiences, scores, corporate family linkages, and public records in D&B's file all hang off it, and many other data vendors and government systems reference it. Businesses obtain one free of charge, and hundreds of millions have been issued globally.

For credit teams, the practical value is disambiguation and family-tree visibility. Legal names are ambiguous — "ABC Construction" exists in every state — but a D-U-N-S number pins the exact entity and location. D&B's corporate linkage then connects branches, subsidiaries, parents, and ultimate global parents, which matters enormously for exposure management: five divisions buying on five accounts may all roll up to one parent whose consolidated exposure exceeds any limit you intended. It also matters for underwriting, because a strong parent does not guarantee a weak subsidiary's debts unless it signs a guarantee.

Capture the D-U-N-S number (or verify it) at application time and store it on the account record. It makes bureau pulls deterministic instead of name-matched, keeps monitoring pointed at the right entity, and lets you roll up corporate-family exposure. Note that a business can have multiple numbers (one per location) and that the number itself carries no rating — it is an identifier, not a score.
